We offer 3 specimen collection methods. A blood draw is the preferred method for genetic screening. We offer same-day courier pick up for all specimens.

Blood

Whole blood collected in an anti-coagulant tube contains white and red blood cells. White blood cells contain a full set of genomic DNA with two copies of every gene. To isolate DNA from whole blood, white blood cells are broken open, all the proteins and lipids from the cells are washed away from the DNA, and the DNA is dissolved in water. Follow the link below for precise instructions about the collection and shipment of blood specimens.

Mouthwash

Both epithelial cells and white blood cells are present in saliva. By simply swishing mouthwash, cells in the saliva can be collected. Once the mouthwash arrives in the lab, the cells are broken open in order to isolate the DNA. Proteins and lipids from within the cells are washed away from the DNA, and the DNA is dissolved in water. Follow the link below for precise instructions about the collection and shipment of mouthwash specimens.

Buccal Brush

Cheek epithelial cells can easily be collected with the use of a few buccal brushes. By vigorously rubbing the inside of the cheek, cells collect on the brush. Once the brush tips arrive in the lab, the cells are washed off the brush and then broken open in order to isolate the DNA. Proteins and lipids from within the cell are washed away from the DNA, and the DNA is dissolved in water. Follow the link below for precise instructions about the collection and shipment of buccal brush specimens.
