Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an out of pocket cost?
Most will not have any out of pocket cost. There should be no out of pocket cost if any of the following apply to you:
- You are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19
- You have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19
- You are in a high-risk group (diabetic, immunocompromised, etc.)
You will be asked for your health insurance information when registering for an appointment. If you do not have insurance, we will ask you for your Social Security number and your driver's license/state ID to submit the cost of your test to the federal program for the uninsured.
If none of the above criteria apply to you, there may be a charge of $100 per test. All PCR testing is $79 cash pay only.
Do I need an appointment?
While appointments are preferred, all our locations accommodate walk-ins. Please note that your registration and wait time may be slightly longer if you are a walk-in patient.
Multiple people in my household need to get tested. Should I make an appointment for each person?
Yes, every individual who is being tested needs to have an appointment made for them. If there is not enough availability, schedule their appointment for later in the same day or the next day and we will do our best to accommodate everyone at the earliest appointment time.
Should I arrive early for my appointment?
No, there is no need to arrive early for your appointment.
Do I need to self-quarantine?
If you have symptoms of COVID-19, or have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19, you should self-quarantine according to CDC guidance. If you are symptomatic and awaiting your test results, members of your household should also consider themselves at risk of exposure.
What test is performed?
NxGen MDx uses a PCR test which looks for active infections only. At this time we do not administer antibody tests which indicate whether a patient had an infection in the past.
Does this test detect the new COVID-19 B.1.1.7 variant?
Yes, the NxGen MDx PCR test does detect this variant of COVID-19. This variant was first identified in September 2020 in the United Kingdom. Currently there is no evidence to suggest that the variant has any impact on the severity of the disease or the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine.
How is the sample collected?
The test is collected via nasal swab or, at our West Michigan locations, a saliva sample may also be used (this requires you to spit into a collection tube). Staff onsite will administer the nasal swab and/or direct you on saliva collection. For minor children, a parent or guardian can administer the swab or, if needed, our nurse onsite can administer it.
How and when will I receive my results?
You will receive your results via the email that you provided at the time of registration. These results should arrive within 24 hours of your sample being received at the lab (which is at the end of the day that your sample was collected). This increases to 48 hours for samples from Florida. If you do not receive your results, please check your spam/junk folder for your results before contacting NxGen MDx about them.
Can I use this test for the purposes of traveling?
Whether or not our test is accepted as proof of testing depends on where you are traveling to. Some states (or countries, if traveling internationally) may only accept tests from certain laboratories. In addition they may only accept certain sample types such as a nasopharyngeal swab. Please check the restrictions of the location you will be traveling to for specific details.
